Abstract

908,973. Radiant oil heaters. SANKEY & SONS Ltd., JOSEPH. June 22, 1961 [May 21, 1960], No. 18030/60. Class 75 (1). . A radiant drip-feed oil heater has a one-way spring-loaded valve 5, between the reservoir 2 and the burner housing 1, which may be opened by a pin 13 fixed to a piston head 11 sliding in a sump 9 which is in communication with the bottom of the burner even with the piston lowered. Normally the valve setting is adjusted by the lever 16 with a top flange 20 which is held in engagement with a ratchet plate 22 by a spring 23 on a pivot bolt 17. Finer adjustment is obtained by a manually operated screwed rod 25. Safety devices.-Various safety devices are incorporated, all of which act on the lever 16 to release it from the ratchet plate and allow the spring 19 to push up the piston head 11, thus sucking fuel out of the burner. A bi-metallic strip 30 will open out if the burner overheats, pushing a rod 31 against the end plate 34 (see Fig. 3) of the lever 16, thus dislodging the lever flange from the ratchet plate. Adjacent the sump 9 is a slide 35 held in contact with the floor by a spring 37. In ease of the heater overturning, a cranked portion at the top of the slide operates on the lever 16 as the slide is pulled down by the spring. If the draught over the top of the heater is very great, a plate 40 on a pivoted shaft 43 with a weighted bottom 45 is moved sufficiently for a knob 46 on the shaft, in contact with the end plate 34 of the lever 16, to dislodge the lever flange from the ratchet plate. In another embodiment, there may be two knobs 46, one above and one below the level of the centre of bolt 17, so that a strong draught either way will actuate the release mechanism.
