Abstract
Acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile is prepared by reacting at an elevated temperature in the vapour phase propylene or isobutene with oxygen and ammonia over a catalyst comprising (i) a mixture of the oxides of tin and antimony and/or (ii) a compound of tin, antimony and oxygen, as claimed in the parent Specification, characterized in that the catalyst has Sn:Sb n 1:4 and before use is heated in a molecular oxygen-containing gas to a temperature of at least 750 DEG C. but not more than 850 DEG C. Specification 904,602 also is referred to.ALSO:A catalyst suitable for the production of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile comprises (i) a mixture of the oxides of tin and antimony and/or (ii) a compound of tin, antimony and oxygen, has Sn : Sb\sU1 : 4, and before use is heated in a molecular oxygen-containing gas to a temperature of at least 750 DEG C. but not more than 850 DEG C. In an example, powdered tin and powdered antimony are separately added to separate portions of hot nitric acid, and the suspensions are mixed and cooled. The solid material is washed by decantation, filtered and pelleted with graphite. Samples of the catalyst are then heated to 825, 800, 775 and, for comparison, 725 DEG C.
