Abstract
<PICT:0968078/C6-C7/1> A preformed tube 5 of e.g. coarse grains of fritted nickel into which a solution of nickel formate has been introduced or on which a film of nickel formate has been placed is mounted on a mandrel 4 and pressed by a plunger 10 which acts through silicone oil to apply pressure to a deformable element comprising radial plates 6 surrounded by a rubber sleeve 9. This construction allows gas to be sucked out from the tube through a pipe 12. The mandrel may be heated electrically or by a hot gas. The tube may be given a final pressing by moving it into a rubber bag 15 and applying pressure by a plunger 18 through silicone oil. The tube may be preformed by centrifuging metal powder agglomerated with a binder, e.g. methyl methacrylate dissolved in acetone. The metal powder may contain a refractory oxide, and the finished article may be used as a filter.
