Abstract
A refractory body is made by forming a mixture of silicon carbide and beryllia in a volume proportion of from 10:90 to 90:10, shaping the mixture into the form of the body and heating it in a non-oxidizing atmosphere so that incipient fusion of the particles occurs. The shaping and heating may be effected simultaneously by hot pressing, or the body may be preformed and then sintered. In shaping the body a temporary binder may be used, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol or water.
