Abstract
968,075. Clutch combinations. FRANCAISE DU FERODO S.A. Oct. 4, 1960 [Oct. 5, 1959; Nov. 30, 1959], No. 13915/64. Divided out of 963,394. Heading F2C. An hydrodynamic torque converter comprising an impeller 10, a turbine 12 and a reactor 13 is in series with a friction clutch having a driven disc 17 engageable between plate portions 16 of a cylinder 14 and an axially movable piston 15, the cylinder 14 and piston 15 being fast in rotation with the turbine 12. A restricted opening 20 is formed in the piston 15 and liquid from the torque converter can pass through this opening to a chamber 18 of the friction clutch and thence through a return conduit containing a control valve to a pump which returns the liquid to the torque converter. If the control valve is open the pressure drop through the opening 20 ensures that the clutch is engaged; closing the valve disengages the clutch. A permanent cooling circulation of liquid is provided from the torque converter, the liquid leaving the converter circuit between the turbine and the reactor.
