Abstract
940,405. Clutch control. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1962 [Feb. 13, 1961], No. 5354/62. Headings F2C, F2D and F2L. An hydromechanical transmission includes a quick-release fluid pressure operated clutch 13 provided with two belleville spring discs 31, 40, the former of which is effective for clutch engagement and during which it stresses the latter, which then effects quick release upon clutch disengagement. As shown the clutch 13 is mounted between a torque converter 11 and a constant-mesh countershaft change-speed gearbox 12 controlled by a hand lever 50. Pressure liquid for the converter and clutch is supplied by a pump P supplying the converter through regulator valves V1, V2, and the clutch through a solenoid valve 75. The clutch has a single plate 19 engageable between backing and pressure plates 21, 22 by an annular actuator piston 18 bearing against spring disc 31 which also engages the pressure plate 22. The inner periphery of the second spring disc 40 engages the inner wall of the actuator cylinder while its outer periphery is engaged by pressure plate 22. Hence when piston 18 is moved to the right to engage the clutch, spring 31, in moving pressure plate 22, flexes spring 40, which is thus able to effect quick release of the pressure plate upon disengagement of the clutch. A centrifugal pressure relief valve 30 is provided. The solenoid valve 75 is controlled by a push button 51 associated with the gear lever 50, the solenoid 52 being de-energized and the valve 75 moving to the right to admit pressure liquid to the piston 18. An accumulator valve A operates in conjunction with the solenoid valve.
