Abstract

967,174. Feeding webs. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MANUFACTURING CO. Inc Sept. 15, 1960, No. 31764/60. Heading B6B. A device for feeding a web of electrically non-conductive material has electrostatic means having a plurality of electrodes located adjacent, but spaced from a web feed member or a brake member, frictionally engaging the web, such that variation of an electrostatic charge applied to the web varies the frictional engagement of the web with the member to control the tension of the web. As shown, a web 10 is drawn from a supply roll 11 past an inking roller 13 by a roller 15. The web is gi ven an electrostatic charge by a corona discharge device, such that the web adheres to the earthed surface 23 of the roller 15 and is fed by rotation of the roller without physical contact of the coated side 19 of the web. The device 21 comprises an elongated bar 24 having spikes 25. The web 10 is tensioned by a stationary bar 26 frictionally engaging the web and cooperating with a corona discharge device 27 which charges the web electrostatically, thereby causing it to be attracted to the bar 26 which thus imparts drag on the web. The applied voltage may be varied to control the drag on the web, e.g. in response to the decreasing diameter of the supply roll. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), an additional feed roller 28 may replace the bar 26 having an electrostatic charging device 31. By adjustment of the speeds of the rollers 28, 15 a desired tension may be maintained in the portion 10a of the web.
