Abstract

953,938. Scooters; safety wheels. G. D. PETERS & CO. Ltd. Jan. 9, 1963 [Jan. 9, 1962], No. 774/62. Headings B7E and B7J. A scooter comprises two steerable front wheels 10, 10a, a single rear wheel 2 and a tubular frame 1 carrying a platform 17. The front wheels 10, 10a have nylon bearings mounted on stub axles which are connected by an Ackermann steering linkage 11, 12 and are secured to the lower ends of a steering column 7 and a short column 5a, both of which are journalled in vertical tubes 5, 6 welded to a raised portion 1b of the frame 1 and to a transverse tube 4 connected to strengthening tubes 3. A rubber buffer 24 may be provided on the frame for engagement with the steering link 12 to limit steering movements. By means of a small lever 20 the lever 19 controlling a brake 18 can be retained in the brake-on position to provide a parking brake, or a parking brake may be provided by arranging a spring (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) to bias the steering mechanism to the left so that the front wheels 10, 10a engage the frame 1. A castor wheel 21 arranged slightly above the supporting surface comes into operation to prevent tipping of the scooter.
