Abstract

953,936. Wettable rutile. NATIONAL LEAD CO. Dec. 21, 1961 [Dec. 22, 1960], No. 45894/61. Heading C1A. Water-wettable rutile TiO 2 pigment is produced from hydroclassified rutile calciner discharge by adding a sulphate free flocculating agent, dewatering and then making an aqueous slurry and adding sulphates free water-soluble salts of titanium, aluminium or silicon or of other Group III-V metals, heating to 20- 100‹ C. and adding acid or alkali to give pH 6.5-8.5 when insoluble oxide or hydroxide coatings are precipitated on to the rutile titanium dioxide pigment. Flocculating agents specified are alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides especially chlorides. Coating agents which may be mixed are titanium tetrachloride, tetrafluoride, tetrabromide and perchlorates, sodium aluminates, aluminium chloride, nitrate, and acetate, sodium silicate, metasilicate, potassium metasilicate and tetrasilicate.
