Abstract

An oxidation catalyst comprises an active porous metal oxide carrier having on the surface thereof a mixture of a predominant amount of copper oxide and a minor amount of rare earth metal oxide. The carrier may be alumina, e.g. x alumina having a pore volume of 0,2-0,4 c.c.s/gm., a surface area of 50-150 sq.m./gm. and an average pore diameter of 70-90 . Other carriers mentioned are other allotropes of alumina, thoria, chromia, magnesia, zirconia and beryllia. The preferred rare earth metal oxides are those of the ceria group, i.e. cerium, praserdymium, neodymium, samarium and europium oxides. Incorporation of copper oxide and rare earth metal oxide may be effected in a variety of ways, e.g. the porous metal oxide may be contacted with a dispersion of copper oxide and one or more rare earth metal oxides in a volatile organic liquid, e.g. methanol, ethanol, or acetone with subsequent removal of the dispersant by evaporation. The copper may be present as CuO, Cu2O2 or a mixture thereof. The catalyst may be prepared as powder, granules, spheres, tablets and pellets. Examples are given. U.S.A. Specifications 1,902,160, 1,903,803, 2,828,189 and 2,909,415 are referred to.
