In a slack adjuster for brake operating mechanism comprising friction pads moved towards one another to engage a brake disc by actuation of a lever 1 to rotate a nut 2 engaging a threaded shaft 5 to which one of the pads is connected, an adjusting nut 7 having a fine thread 6 in threaded engagement with the exterior of the operating nut 2 abuts a shaft 10 to which the other pad is connected, this adjusting nut being moved axially along the operating nut 2 to reduce the slack when a predetermined amount of slack in the mechanism is exceeded. The adjusting nut 7 bears against a roller thrust bearing 9 on the shaft 10, and the exterior of the nut 7 is formed with a plurality of ratchet teeth 11 which are engaged by a spring-pressed pawl 12. Operation of the lever 1 causes rotation of the nut 2 and hence axial movement of the shaft 5. If the rotation of the nut 2 exceeds the angle subtended by one tooth 11, then the pawl 12 engages the next tooth so as to effect rotation and hence axial movement of the nut 7 with respect to the nut 2 when the latter is returned to its original position.
