Abstract

1,068,173. Automatic brake adjustment. GIRLING Ltd. Feb. 6, 1964 [Feb. 16, 1963], No. 6382/63. Addition to 1,050,483. Heading F2E. A brake having two separate means of application, one by a hand lever, has automatic wear adjustment means effected by the angular movement of the hand lever and coupled through a slipping clutch to an intermediate member which is held against angular movement by the hand brake load, a spring effecting angular movement of an adjusting member when the intermediate member is released, a ratchet device being provided for preventing or limiting reverse movement of the limiting member. In a disc brake, a friction pad is applied in service braking by an hydraulic piston acting directly on the end of a nut 13 screwed on to a plunger 14 bearing on the pad, and is applied for parking by a hand lever connected by a link 27 to rotate member 25 which is moved forward by the ball and ramp device 29, 30 to carry with it the race 23, sleeve 21 and flanged nut 13. The ring 25 has a split bush 26 frictionally gripping sleeve 21 which is prevented from rotating with the ring, when the hand brake is applied, by pawl-andratchet 36, 38, the bush 26 slipping on the sleeve 21. A spring 41 engages the pawl and is a close fit on the end of nut 13. On hand brake release the ring moves little relatively to the sleeve until the load is released.' If thereafter the ring moves through a greater angle than the spacing of the ratchet teeth 38 the nut 13 is rotated to take up wear. If the brake is held applied by the hydraulic means while the hand lever is released the nut is held against rotation, a spring 39 gripping the end of the nut is consequently stressed and will rotate the nut, when the brake is released, to effect the adjustment.
