Abstract

957,901. Liquefying gases. SULZER FRERES S.A. July 10, 1961 [July 29, 1960], No. 24958/61. Heading F4P. A plant for cooling or liquefying gases, e.g. hydrogen or helium, comprises two components, each of which is provided with a jacket of porous solid insulating material and both of which are disposed within a vacuum vessel having a vacuum of 10<SP>-1</SP> to 10<SP>-3</SP> mm. Hg. As described, a vacuum vessel 1 has a detachable cover 2 and has disposed therein a heat exchanger 4 and a rectifying column 5; the column 5 is covered with a jacket 6 of granulated insulating material covered by a perforated sheet metal shell 7, and the heat exchanger 4 is surrounded by a mat 8 of synthetic resin foam which is clipped to the heat exchanger. The insulating material may be in powder, granular or fibrous form, e.g. cork, synthetic resin foam, mineral wool, kieselguhr, asbestos fibre, glass fibre or slag wool fibre. To reduce thermal radiation metal powder may be incorporated into at least one of the jackets or the latter may have attached thereto a metal foil skin.
