Abstract
851,458. Nuclear reactors. WHESSOE Ltd. March 31, 1959 [Dec. 31, 1957], No. 40448/57. Class 39(4). The interior surface of a nuclear reactor pressure vessel is protected by a heat insulating covering formed of sheets of stainless steel, corrugated to contain pockets of gas. The covering is secured by bolts welded to the shell inner surface. As shown, the inner surface of the pressure vessel 10 is covered by the metal sheets 11, 12 which are spaced by the corrugations in 11. The cover plates are urged against 11, 12 by the nut 16 on stud 15 welded to 10. The bolt and nut assembly is covered by the dome 19, which supports the insulating sheets 17, 18 and is welded to 13. To limit the compression of the insulation by plate 13 the ferrule 20 is threaded over bolt 15. In other embodiments, not shown, ferrule may be replaced by a shoulder on the bolt and the nut thermally insulated from the plate 13 by a disc of ceramic material. Pipes or ducts which project into the vessel are protected by similar covering.
