A filled carbon is fed to the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 to apply glue to the side flaps and then seal the flaps against the corresponding sides and end of the carton, finally discharging them down the shoot 162. The carton (Fig. 13) is fed in the direction of the arrow by V-belts 42 to a position where dogs 45 on the infeed chain 46 can engage it to advance it under the inclined plate 47 which closes the lid of the carton down with the side flaps extended outwardly as shown in Fig. 14. Vertically reciprocating glue applicators rise from below the adhesive level in the container 55 to print adhesive strips 109, 110 on the underside of the flaps 105, 106. In this position the carton is supported (Fig. 2) on an elevator plate 51 and by side panel supports 53 and end panel support 52. The side panels are preheated by heated guides 54 and the end by the support 52 heated by conduction from the adhesive bath 55. The glued carton is then raised by the elevator plate 51 into the compression chamber 82 (Fig. 10) where the side flaps are held in contact with the carton sides until the adhesive has set, the carton being held in the raised position by retaining fingers on the spring-urged pivoted plate 84. Upward motion of the cartons in the compression chamber causes the uppermost carton to be engaged by the dogs on the outfeed conveyer 156 to discharge it down the shoot 162.
