817,064. Packaging machines. GLAZER, I. D. June 17, 1957, No. 19017/57. Class 94(1). A machine forces resilient carriers C over bottle necks by pressing them downwards onto the grouped bottles. Bottles arranged in crates are placed on a roller conveyer 14 and are fed beneath the carrier applying apparatus 15 by a reciprocating pusher 30 operated by cylinder and piston means 28, 29. The apparatus includes a vertically moveable platform 17 operated by cylinder and piston means 52, on a fixed head 47 and having mounted on it magazines 20 for stacks of carriers C. As the crate passes beneath the apparatus 15, the bottle necks enter between rails 62 suspended from the platform 17. Also suspended from the platform are members 66, these being joined to the sides of openings 50 in the platform by brackets 67, Fig. 3, and having resiliently mounted locating devices 72 at their lower ends. When the platform descends, the rails 62 engage the bottle sides and the devices 72 engage their caps E. Sliders 19 reciprocated by cylinder and piston means 82, 82<SP>1</SP> feed the carriers to the openings 50 (as shown four are fed for each crate) and the carriers fall towards the bottles, the members 66 entering their bottle gripping apertures F. When the carriers are resting above the bottles with their apertures F engaging the devices 72, rams 97, Fig. 7, operated by cylinder and piston means 92-95, press them downwards over the bottles, the devices 72 preventing damaging of the carriers by the caps E. The platform and rams rise and a further crate is fed forward by the pusher 30, this crate ejecting the crate previously operated upon. The machine is adjustable for different bottle heights. The operation is automatic, being controlled by the action of the moveable elements on valves controlling pressure fluid supply.
