In a plain bearing assembly, a bottom bearing shell 4 and a top bearing shell 5 are retained by two elements 6 in a two-part housing comprising a saddle 1 and a cover 2, the elements 6 each have a projecting-pin 7 which engages in one of the apertures 8 in the parts 1, 2 and have projections 11, Fig. 3, which engage the ends of the bearing shells 4, 5. The cover 2 has a pin 9 which is received by a passage 10 in the top shell 5 and is secured by struts 3 to the saddle 1. A ring segment 15 is positioned at each end of the bearing to axially locate an engine crankshaft 16 in the bearing. Each segment 15 engages a thrust surface 17, Fig. 2, on the crankshaft 16; has a flange 18 for engagement with the saddle 1; and is prevented from rotating by the elements 6. In modifications, the elements 6 may have projections 11 as shown in Fig. 4, or, where such projections are not possible, a retaining element 20, Fig. 5, has a central projection 21 engageable in a recess 22 in the shell 23. The bearing cover, saddle and retaining element are located relatively to one another by screws which extend through apertures 25 in the retaining element 20.
