A lighting unit for a motor vehicle comprises a plurality of lamps and a transparent front pane in at least one opening in which at least one lamp comprising a reflector, a light source and a cover disc is mounted as a self-contained assembly, at least one lamp comprising a reflector and a light source being disposed behind the pane. Fig. 4 shows a pane 1 mounted in a frame 2 and having an opening in which is mounted a headlamp 12 comprising a lamp, a reflector and a front pane 4 mounted as a selfcontained assembly in the pane 1. A parking lamp 13 is mounted in a housing 10 behind the pane 1. The unit may also embody a fog lamp and a flashing signal lamp.
