Abstract
A mixture of ethylene and 2 to 3.5% of isobutylene or propylene is copolymerized at 28,000 to 35,000 psi and at 400 DEG to 450 DEG F., using a catalyst such as t-Bu perbenzoate, t-Bu peracetate or di-t-Bu peroxide preferably in the presence of a carrier such as mineral oil, benzene or saturated hydrocarbons. The polymerization may be in bulk or in the presence of benzene or water and may be with a continuous feed having a residence time of 15 to 60 seconds. The products may be of density 0.9195 to 0.9225 and melt index of 1 to 5 and find application as film having improved optical properties, e.g. for use in the packaging of foodstuffs, soft goods, pharmaceutical and surgical supplies, hardware, toys and garments.
