A self-aligning bearing, having curved bearing surfaces, provides a mounting for a radial bearing which supports a shaft. The radial bearing may be plain, ball or roller and pressurized fluid may be supplied to the plain bearing and/or to the self-aligning bearing. In an embodiment, a roll-neck (not shown) of a rolling mill is supported in a bearing 25 having passages 43 therein which connect, via restrictors 42, to recesses 41 in an inner member 24 which, along with an outer member 23, form the self-aligning bearing. In use, lubricant supplied through a pipe 49 causes a film to build up between the roll-neck bearing surface and the bearing surfaces of the bushing 25 and of a pad 29, the latter supporting the shaft when it is stationary. When the shaft is rotating and is loaded radially, the lubricant is forced through the passages 43 and the restrictors 42 so as to create a lubricant film between bearing surfaces 36, 37 of the self-aligning bearing members 23, 24. In modifications, the self-aligning bearing is supplied directly with pressurized lubricant and the passages 43 are omitted; the radial bearing is a roller bearing; pressurized lubricant is supplied which builds up between the bearing surfaces of the roll-neck and of the supporting pad, seals are provided to prevent the pressurized lubricant from entering the roller bearing, which is lubricated separately.
