947,074. Handling radio-active material. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oet. 17, 1960 [Nov. 6, 1959], No. 35516/60. Heading BAQ. Apparatus for the metallographic study of radio-active samples comprises a series of sealed cells 1 . . . 5 disposed in a protective enclosure 6 having a concrete rear wall 7, a cast iron front wall 8, lead end walls 9, 10 and a roof of iron and lead slabs 16, 17. The samples to be studied or treated are introduced into the cell 1 through inlet apparatus 30 and are then transferred to the cells 2 ... 5 in succession by a sealed hollow conveyer 23 containing buckets running on rollers. Each cell has an opening in its floor whereby a sealed connection 25 may be established between the cell and the interior of the conveyer, the cells and conveyer being maintained under partial vacuum and filled with nitrogen. A crane (not shown) may lift the cells, after removal of the slabs 16, 17 and place them in a decontamination chamber 11. The four sides of each cell have windows 18 ... 21, the cells having lighting equipment and being viewable through portholes 22. Manipulators (not shown) in the cells are controlled magnetically by members situated outside the cells, microphones disposed in the cells enabling the operations being performed in the cells to be heard. A fixed cell 14 contains a microscope which is remotely controlled.
