Abstract

1,102,139. Shielded chambers. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 4 July, 1966 [8 July, 1965], No. 29963/66. Heading B4Q. Operations on radio-active material are carried out in a removable α-protection chamber situated within a working cell 4 or 6 formed in a #, γ protection chamber 2. The α-protection chamber comprises a cover 20 and base plate 18 with an interposed sealing gasket 26, and rests on a stand 22. In order to decontaminate the α-protection chamber it is removed to a decontamination cell (36) (Fig. 2, not shown) also formed in the chamber 2. To this end a roof slab 8 of the cell 4 is removed by a crane 16 operating in a tunnel 12 and the α-protection cell is lifted by a crane 30 into the tunnel and traversed along the latter until it is above the cell (36), the roof slab (38) of the cell (36) having been previously removed by a crane (40), so that the α-protection cell may be lowered on to a turntable (46) in the cell. The cell (36) includes a crane (54) for removing the cover 20, a telemanipulator (58) and air extraction nozzles (62).
