Abstract
946,558. Welding by fusion. KLOCKNERWERKE A.G. June 30, 1960 [July 2, 1959; Oct. 20, 1959; Oct. 28, 1959 (2)], No. 22977/60. Heading B3R. [Also in Division G3] In coating a metal base with a surfacing metal by electric welding an electrode in the form of a sheet of the surfacing metal extending across substantially the full width of the base is immersed in a bath of molten flux in the base. A cylinder 1, Fig. 1, to be internally coated is provided with end flanges 3<SP>1</SP> to retain the molten flux. The electrode 4 is coiled about a mandrel to which welding current is supplied. The cylinder 1 and the mandrel are rotated from a common drive, the speeds of rotation being adjusted according to the coating thickness required. In a modification for coating a plate 6, Fig. 2, the molten flux 2 is contained in a frame 7, which may have hollow walls through which a coolant is passed. Either the plate 6 or the frame 7 is traversed. The rear wall of the frame 7 may be replaced by a water-cooled copper roller which smooths the coating. The flux may be melted prior to coating commencing by a number of non consumable electrodes. Arcs are struck between these electrodes and the plate 6 by use of a high frequency discharge. In order to maintain a constant gap between the edge of the short electrode 4 and the base being coated the electrode feeding motor is supported the electrode feeding motor is supplied through a voltage divider with the welding voltage.
