Abstract

A filament of tantalum or tantalum alloy mounted on supports within the envelope of an elastic incandescent lamp is converted to tantalum carbide in situ by passing current through it to raise it to a temperature of 2000-2600 DEG C. in an atmosphere of hydrogen containing 1/8 -\ba1/4 % of methane or an atmosphere of hydrogen saturated with xylol. The carburizing may be carried out in stages, the coil being heated to 2250 DEG C. for 1 1/2 minutes, the envelope being then exhausted and refilled with hydrogen saturated with xylol, the process being repeated five times. Thereafter, a gas filling with an increased content of hydrocarbon is used, the temperature being raised to 2380 DEG C. for half a minute and then to 2500 DEG C. over 1 1/2 minutes, this process being repeated four times. The upper half of the coil may be coated with a suspension of colloidal graphite in water to prevent sagging of the finished filament.
