Abstract
944,803. Reactor control rods. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 2, 1961 [March 11, 1960], No. 8636/60. Drawings to Specification. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor having a graphite moderator which is pierced by vertical channels in which the control rods may be moved, the control rods are each formed of a boron-steel tube the upper two-thirds of which houses graphite plugs and the lower end of which is provided with a shock absorber. The plugs prevent neutron streaming vertically upwards through the channels and the shock absorber permits the rods to fall, under gravity, when they are released from the drive mechanism during a fault. Stray neutrons which pass between the control rod and the channel walls are scattered and absorbed by further barriers at the tube upper end.
