Abstract

Synthetic linear polyamides are stabilized against the destructive effects of exposure to heat and oxygen by the incorporation with the polyamide during or after manufacture of an organic antioxidant or mixture of organic antioxidants together with a copper compound and optionally an oxyacid of phosphorus. Specified antioxidants are diphenylamine, 4:41dimethoxy diphenylamine, bis-(4-octylphenyl) amine, 4-isopropyl aminodiphenylamine, reaction products of aniline with acetaldehyde or butyraldehyde, reaction products of acetone with aniline, p-phenetidine or diphenylamine, N:N1-diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine, N:N1-diisopropyl-p-phenylene diamine, N:N1-di-b -naphthyl-p-phenylene diamine, catechol, 2:4-dimethyl-6-t-butyl phenol, 2:6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol, styrenated phenol, 2-a -methyl cyclohexyl-4:6-dimethyl phenol, 1:1-methylene-bis-2-naphthol, 4:4-butylidene-bis-(3-methyl-6-t-butyl) phenol and bis-(2-hydroxy-3-a -methyl cyclohexyl-5-methyl phenyl) methane. Specified copper compounds are the halides, phosphates and phosphites and the copper salts of acetic, propionic, lactic, p laurilinic, stearic, benzoic, sebacic, pimelic, adipic and glutaric acids. In the examples, hexamethylene diammonium adipate is polymerized in the presence of acetic acid, titanium dioxide, copper acetate and:- (1) bis-(2-hydroxy-3-a -methylcyclohexyl-5-methyl phenyl)methane and (2) a reaction product of acetone with diphenylamine.
