Abstract

A method of making high-grade transformer steel comprises introducing slag-free molten steel into a ladle, deoxidizing and/or alloying with silicon and/or aluminium, and stirring the melt by means of an inert gas passed therethrough. The gas may be introduced through a porous body introduced at an off-centre position or may be supplied through a hollow stopper rod having a plurality of small bores above the connection with the stopper. The stirring operation may be performed in a vacuum chamber.
