Abstract
Manganese boride, from which metallic manganese may subsequently be obtained by vacuum distillation, is prepared by simultaneously reducing oxidic manganese material and boron oxide with a carbonaceous reducing agent in an arc or induction furnace.ALSO:Manganese and chromium are extracted from their borides by vacuum distillation, the borides remaining solid. Initially, the borides are in particulate form ranging from 0.125 to 0.5 inches in diameter. Temperature ranges employed are 1500-1750 DEG C. for manganese and 1700-1850 DEG C. for chromium.
