Abstract

938,260. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials; needling. HAIRLOCK CO. Ltd. Nov. 24, 1961 [Dec. 1, 1960], No. 41324/60. Class 42 (2). In a pad of compressed rubberized hair, i.e. upholstery fibres such as horsehair, wool, coconut fibre, Algerian grass or polyamide filaments coated with an adhesive remaining flexible when dry such as rubber latex or plasticized polyvinyl chloride, having two substantially plane faces parallel to each other, the hairs extend multi - directionally between the plane faces with a sinuous grain resulting from lateral compression, in a direction substantially parallel to the plane faces, applied at closelyspaced intervals, indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2, within the thickness of the pad during manufacture thereof and before the setting of the adhesive. Apparatus for the batch production of the pads comprises multiple-slotted plates 7, 8 and needles 15 held by bars 14 slidably mounted by sleeves 13 on two pairs of rods 12, the sleeves 13 alternating on the rods 12. The bars 14 are linked together in pairs by slotted links 16. Beams 17 also slide on the rods 12 and are connected by links 18 to the respective end bars 14. Each beam 17 carries a rack 19 to mesh with a pinion 20 driven by a motor 23. A sheet of hair coated with adhesive is placed on the plate 7 which is then raised by a jack 9 and lifts the plate 8 resting on distance-pieces to suit the pad thickness placed thereon. The needles 15 pass through the slots in the plates. The motor 23 is actuated and the beams 17 move inwardly to abut the end bars 14 which then move successive bars inwardly until the bars 14 are closed towards the centre. Plunger locks 11 are protruded to engage the plate 8 and the plate 7 is lowered leaving the sheet 24 on the needles 15, Fig. 8. An open rectangular frame 25 is placed on the plate 7 in alignment with the sheet 24 and the plate 7 is raised so that the frame surrounds the sheet. The locks 11 are retracted and the plates 7, 8 are lowered until the plate 8 contacts supports 10. The adhesive of the sheet is vulcanized or set whilst it is held in the frame 25. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) for the continuous production of pads, needlebars are mounted on slats of an endless conveyer and are moved into a web moving on a conveyer between slotted parallel plates so that the needle slats move with, and successively close up on one another in, the web until the adhesive has set. In a modification at least one pair of sets of needles is caused repeatedly to penetrate the web and one set is relatively moved laterally towards the other for a short distance and then withdrawn. The needles may be mounted on parallel bars one or both of which is or are reciprocated. The needles of each pair may penetrate the web from one side or opposite sides thereof.
