Abstract
937,448. Coating quartz glass. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 8, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960], No. 32331/61. Class 56. A quartz glass envelope of an ultra-violet radiator, capable of passing radiation above 2100‹ A. while absorbing ozone forming radiation below 1900‹ A. is provided with a surface layer approximately 0.01 to 1 micron thick, consisting substantially of SiO 2 and ZnO at a content of from 0.01 to 0.5 mgm. of ZnO per square cm. The ZnO-SiO 2 layer may also contain B 2 O 3 , Ca ions, which do not influence the transmission for a wavelength above 2100‹ A. The envelope is dipped or sprayed by an alcoholic (e.g. methanol) solution of compounds which yield SiO 2 and ZnO on hydrolysis and/or pyrolysis. Such compounds may be selected from zinc chloride, nitrate or acetate, esters of silicic acid, silicon halides, silicones and siloxanes. The radiator is turned on to heat the layer to a temperature of 400-700‹ C. The dipping or spraying process may be repeated several times.
