Abstract
935,560. Bending thermoplastic tubes. EXTRUDEX Ltd. Feb. 8, 1962 [Jan. 2, 1961], No. 71/61. Class 87(2). To form a bend or series of bends in a heated thermoplastic tube of e.g. P.V.C. the tube, which may be extruded, is suspended between mould halves 2, 3 by a top clamp 5, which is counterbalanced and vertically moveable, and a bottom clamp 4 which moves horizontally with mould piece 2. The mould halves are closed and the tube first collapses within the mould cavity, Fig. 3 (not shown) and is then blow moulded through duct 10 in lower plug 9 to conform with the shape of the mould. The top plug 8 may be opened to the atmosphere through a valve so that after the moulding operation the tube may be cooled by a steady stream of air. The tube may be preheated, while suspended between the mould halves, by hot air from a source which may be connected to duct 10. The mould halves may be hollowed to contain heating fluid, to further heat the plastic prior to moulding, or cooling fluid. The operation may be wholly or partly controlled automatically.
