Preceding the main cutter 3 of a mineralmining machine is a pre-cutter 5 that is mounted on the appropriate side, depending on the direction of advance of the machine, of that part of the gear-box 7 which transmits a drive from a motor to the main cutter and which is upstanding from the machine in which the motor is housed. A drive for the pre-cutter extends up through the gear-box to emerge out of the side thereof and pass into the precutter.
