Abstract

920,873. Machine tool details; lathe details. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 21, 1959 [July 24, 1958], No. 25010/59. Class 83 (3). A tool-slide for a lathe or other machine tool is adjusted for feed by means of a cam which operates through automatically interposed gauging slips and adjustable micrometer screws. A tool-slide 5, Fig. 1, carrying tools 3, 4, in a slot 1 is urged to the right by a pneumatic cylinder and fixed piston 7, 8, respectively. The feed is controlled by a rotating cam 27 the follower 28 for which is carried by a slide 16. The slide 5 has a block 11 attached thereto which carries an adjustable stop-screw 12 for each tool. The stop screws bear against the slide 16 through vertically sliding gauging slips 14 which are cam-operated and gauge the tool position. The gauging slips for a particular tool is withdrawn by a spring when the tool has operated and the corresponding stop screw is then rendered ineffective by passing through a clearance hole 17 in the slide 16. The stop screws 12 may be coupled to work-gauging means (not described) to give automatic adjustment to the tools. The gauging and feed mechanism may be applied to a sliding headstock 40, Fig. 4, carrying a workpiece 45, the tools being similarly gauged in a direction at right angles to the headstock movement.
