Abstract

928,270. Agglutinated fibrous fabrics. R. DILO. June 27, 1961, No. 23181/61. Class 42 (2). A method of continuously producing preformed pads of fibres, e.g. animal hair, vegetable or synthetic fibres, bonded with a liquid binding agent, e.g. latex, or a dispersion of a synthetic resin, comprises the steps of depositing a fleecy sheet on a first endless conveyer band, conveying the fleecy sheet to a shoot, applying liquid binding agent in the form of a curtain flowing from an adjustable supply device to the fleecy sheet on the shoot, soaking the wetted fleecy sheet with binding agent by passage through pairs of rollers and conveying the soaked fleecy sheet on to a second endless conveyer band. As shown, a fibrous strand 1 is fed by feed-roller 23 into a strand-disintegrating device whereby it is formed into loosened-up fibres 3 which are conveyed by an air current through conduit 26 to distributer 5 and thence to volumetric hopper 4 having at its discharge end a pair of rollers 6 which extract the fibres from hopper 4 in the form of a uniform fleecy sheet 7 and deposit it on endless conveyer 8 whereby it is conveyed to shoot 29. Liquid binding agent is supplied, from a supply source, through pipe 13 to basin 9 whence it flows over overflow 10, of width corresponding to that of sheet 7, in the form of a curtain 11 on to sheet 7 on the shoot, to produce fleecy sheet 12 wetted with binder. Sheet 12 then passes between pairs of rollers 14 whereby it is compressed to ensure soaking of all the fibres, with binder. Cylinder 15 fitted with garnett wire is arranged to tease fleecy sheet 12 and disperse it on to endless conveyer band 16, having a variable drive. By varying the speed of conveyers 8 and 16 various transverse forms of profile may be produced on the fleecy sheet, as shown in Fig. 2, and similar longitudinal profiles 17 may be produced by inserting rods in perforated plates 28 see Fig. 3 (not shown), to vary the area of the distributer 5. The amount of liquid binder delivered to the sheet 7 may be varied transversely of the sheet by making the pipe 13 adjustable, or longitudinally of the sheet 7 by giving the edge 10 of the basin 9 a suitable profile. When synthetic fibres are used, they are preferably admitted horizontally on the band 8. The impregnated sheet 12 is passed to a drier and to a moulding apparatus.
