Abstract

926,481. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Sept. 22, 1959 [Sept. 30, 1958], No. 31121/58. Class 103 (1). A spot-type disc brake comprises a pair of angularly-movable pressure plates 5 pivotally mounted on a fixed brake housing 2 and axially aligned one on each side of a brake disc 1 such that actuation of a pair of fluidpressure actuators 10, 11 associated with the housing moves the pressure-plates 5 into frictional contact with the brake disc. The brake may also be applied mechanically by means of a pivoted lever arrangement 20, 19 which also incorporates an automatic adjusting device 25, 27, 36. As shown in Fig. 3, an automatic adjusting device and pad-retracting mechanism in the form of a soft wire pin 32 may be incorporated between each pressure-plate 5 and the calliper end 3 of the fixed housing 2 such that as the friction pads wear the soft wire pins 32 are progressively deformed and bent by the bosses 35 on the angularly movable pressureplates 5. Each wedge-shaped friction pad 6 is secured to its associated pressure-plate 5 by means of a thin metal backing plate 7 which is slipped into a recess in the face of the pressureplate and clipped over a stud 9 on the radially outer end of the pressure-plate. The ends 11b of each piston rod 11a is formed as a partspherical portion which engages a complementary shaped recess in the pressure-plate.
