Abstract

1,092,251. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Aug. 24, 1964 [Aug. 31, 1963], No. 34451/64. Heading FE. In a disc brake a non-rotatable caliper-type housing 2 having a pair of limbs 3, 4 straddling a portion of a periphery of a rotatable brake disc 1 and mounted on a pin 8 supported by a non- rotatable member 5 of the brake so that the housing can move in a direction parallel to the axis of the disc, one of the limbs 4 of the housing has a friction element 13 fixed thereto and the other limb 3 is associated with a friction element 14 which is movable axially into engagement with the disc, the friction element 14 being mounted on the pin 8 by means of a bush 17 provided on a backing plate 16 so that it can move in a direction parallel to the braking surfaces of the disc, the backing plate 16 having a corrugated surface on the side remote from the disc and slidably engageable with a complementary corrugated surface provided on a member 20 fixed to the housing to form a wedge device. When a tiltable thrust member (not shown) is actuated by an hydraulic piston-andcylinder device 15, movement of the axially movable friction element 14 in a forward direction parallel to the normal direction of forward rotation of the disc causes relative movement of the corrugated surfaces which generates an axial thrust tending to increase the pressure between the friction elements and the disc. The member 20 has moulded thereto a block 23 of heat-resistant plastic material and the member 20 is fixed to the housing by pegs 21 which fit into sockets in the link 3 of the caliper housing, the plugs 21 engaging recesses 22 in the member 20. The caliper housing 2 is prevented from rotation in a circumferential direction by the engagement of feet 9 and 10 formed on the housing with shoulders 11 and 12 respectively formed on the non-rotatable member 5. The invention may also be applied to a disc brake of the opposed cylinder type where both the housing and the disc are axially fixed and both friction elements are movable relative to the housing, it is necessary to provide two wedge devices, one for the friction element on each side of the disc, in order to balance the reaction forces set up on the housing by each wedge device.
