Abstract

926,088. Measuring electrically. CARL SCHENCK MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. April 5, 1961 [May 21, 1960], No. 12244/61. Class 40 (1). In a load cell in which the sensitive elements are sealed inside a casing and the member to which the load is applied is sealed to the casing by, e.g., a diaphragm, the load-receiving member is sealed to the casing at a second point so that any load on the sensitive elements due to difference in pressure between the inside and the outside of the casing acting on the first sealing means is compensated by an equal but opposite force generated in the second sealing means. Fig. 1 shows a cell in which the deflections of a bar 1, due to a load applied to a member 4, are detected by strain gauges 2. The member 4 being sealed to the casing 3 and 5 by diaphragms 6 and 7, changes in differential pressure across these diaphragms imposing a stress on the member 4 but not stressing the bar 1. An alternative embodiment is shown in Fig. 2 in which the sensitive element, i.e. bar 11 having strain gauges 12 attached thereto has an annular sleeve 16 attached to its end 15, the sleeve being sealed to the casing by diaphragms 17 and 18 and to the sensitive element by diaphragm 19.
