Abstract
913,894. Anamorphotic periscopes. HOPP, G. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 15, 1958], No. 30855/59. Class 97 (1). A periscopic system suitable for armoured vehicles and the like comprises an anamorphotic objective to compress an elliptical field of view, preferably with horizontal major axis, into a one-dimensionally distorted circular image field which may then be further imaged by an ordinary spherical system and finally imaged by an anamorphosing system to compensate the distortion and present via an eyepiece a suitably magnified image of the elliptical field of view. As shown in Fig. 3, the anamorphotic objective 16 comprising cylindrical lenses 17, 18 and mirror 19 is disposed outside the armour-plating 5 and the compressed circular image 2 (see Fig. 4) of an elliptical object field 1 is imaged by the spherical imaging system 10 on an infrared image converter 11 (for night use), the final image 3 being viewed by the eyepiece 22 via an anamorphosing correcting system 23 which extends the circular compressed image 2 to correspond with the elliptical field of view. If desired, the distorted circular field may be left uncorreoted. The direction of viewing is preferably parallel to that of the objective axis, but the light path through the periscope may include additional right-angled reflections. The objective may also be of the mirror prism-type, two of the prism faces having cylindrical power. The invention is said to provide wider field of view in one dimension with no loss of resolving power as compared with a spherical system.
