Abstract

911,748. Torque measuring. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. May 15, 1961 [May 19, 1960], No. 17767/60. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for measuring the torque transmitted by an epicyclic gearing comprises a piston 15 and cylinder 16 connection between a fixed member 14 and flanges 12 on the reaction member 11. Several pistons and cylinders may be provided. Fluid pressure is supplied to the cylinders 16 and is increased as the torque increases, to provide a balancing force on the reaction member 11, by means of a control valve comprising a dumb-bell unit 25 slidable in a fixed member 26 and urged by a spring 29 against a stop 30 on a flange 12. Movement of stop 30 and hence unit 25 relative to the fixed member 26 varies the size of a passage 25A connecting fluid pressure from pump 24 to a gallery 21 supplying pressure to cylinders 16. A pressure gauge is connected to gallery 21 and the reading of this may be taken as a measure of torque.
