Abstract

In a device for the gasification at elevated temperatures of finely divided fuels in suspension with a gas which is oxygen or oxygen-enriched air, or a blend thereof with endothermically-reacting gasifying agents (such as steam and/or carbon dioxide), the mixture of the finely divided fuel and said gas is blown through a nozzle into a reaction chamber, which widens conically in the direction of flow of the mixture and which opens into a gas-collecting chamber, from which the gas produced is discharged upwardly and any gasification residues are discharged downwardly, the reaction chamber being rigidly fixed and the inlet pipes for fuel and gas being rigidly connected thereto, the gascollecting chamber however being connected to the reaction chamber in a gas-tight but non- rigid manner. In this way, the gas-collecting chamber can move relatively to the reaction chamber, under the action of thermal expansion. The fuel to be gasified may be a solid fuel in powder form, or a liquid fuel (e.g. hydrocarbon oil) in vaporous or atomized form. In the drawing, finely divided solid fuel is fed towards the reaction chamber 4 by means of worm 9 and is blown into the reaction chamber by oxygen admitted through hollow shaft 10. The endothermically-reacting gasifying agent is introduced into the reaction chamber through annular duct 12. The reaction chamber 4, which widens conically towards the gas-collecting chamber 2, has walls of refractory masonry 3 and is surrounded by a cooling water system 5. A high temperature is maintained in the reaction chamber so that the fuel ignites immediately upon entry therein. If desired, a plurality of reaction chambers, rigidly connected together, may lead to a single gas-collecting chamber. The gas-collecting chamber 2 also has walls of refractory masonry 6 and is surrounded by a cooling water system 7. Reaction chamber 4 is supported on a stand 13 and is also rigidly connected to pipes supplying the reaction media. Packing 14 permits relative movement between the reaction chamber, whilst at the same time preventing escape of gas.
