Abstract
Welds are effected and heat treated by bringing such metal parts as nickel or its alloys, but particularly sections of iron or steel piping in proximity at the surfaces which are to be welded, placing blocks of an exothermic composition on the metal parts near these surfaces, firing the composition to preheat the parts, thereafter effecting the weld and allowing the fired composition blocks to cool in situ, thereby heating the weld and adjacent heat-affected areas to a temperature, e.g. at least 600 DEG C. for low alloy steel to at least 900 DEG C. for alloy steel containing 5% Cr and 0.5% Mo, from which they cool slowly, thus annealing and stress-relieving the weld. Preferably, the blocks may be moved, after welding, towards one another to cover the point of the weld. The composition contains finely divided aluminium, an oxidizing agent in insufficient quantity to completely oxidize all the aluminium, e.g. MnO2 and/or Fe2O3 with or without sodium or potassium nitrate or chlorate, and a heat-insulating filler, e.g. granulated grog, alumina or furnace aggregate, with not more than 5% by weight of siliceous material; a fluoride, e.g. cryolite, binder such as bentonite, core gum or sulphite lye, with or without a cement additive, e.g. gypsum plaster, may also be added to the composition. The blocks may be formed in situ by applying the composition in the form of a paste and drying or a plurality of contiguous blocks carried on a flexible support may be used. The blocks may be fluted or corrugated to reduce contact with the metal and/or backed with a heat-insulating material such as grog, asbestos or suitable admixture (see Group V) and so fabricated to allow access of air. Specifications 568,453 and 819,077 also are referred to.ALSO:A heat-insulating material, suitable for backing an exothermic composition (see Group II) block used in the welding of metal parts (see Group XXII), has the composition by weight: furnace aggregate 55 parts, paper pulp and wood chippings 40 parts; asbestos fibre 5 parts, whole being bound with gum arabic or sulphite lye. Specifications 568,453 and 819,077 also are referred to.
