In a thermal regenerator of the rotary ducttype, having heat-transfer material 1 contained in sector-shaped compartments 2 of a stationary housing, and removable for replacement or repair through openings normally closed by doors 7 in the circumferential wall of the housing, blanking plates are provided selectively to isolate from the heat-exchanging fluid streams any of the housing compartments in which the heat-transfer material is being changed or serviced. The blanking plates may be separate plate members 15 inserted through suitably positioned slots 16 in the housing wall 6a as shown in Fig. 4, or they may be plate members 35 hinged or pivoted above and below the heat-transfer material 1 as shown in Fig. 10.
