Abstract
903,966. Diffusion pumps. BALZERS A.G. FUR HOCHVAKUUM-TECHNIK UND DUNNE SCHICHTEN. Feb. 10, 1961 [March 9, 1960], No. 5002/61. Class 71. A device for blocking through-flow of organic vapours in a vacuum conduit 4, Fig. 1, has, transverse to the flow path, at least one baffle plate 9 arranged in juxtaposition to at least one coaxial ring or rod shaped electrode 5, the baffle plate itself forming an electrode for an electrical discharge. The annular electrode 5, surrounded by a permanent magnet 8, is mounted coaxially in vapour conduit 4 on top of a diffusion pump 1 between watercooled baffle plates 2, 9. An alternating or direct current electric discharge is emitted between the baffle plates 2, 9, to ionize and deflect the oil molecules towards the baffle plates where they are precipitated, sometimes in the form of a solid polymer of lower vapour pressure. Alternatively, the electric discharge may decompose the high molecular vapours into low molecular vapours which may be removed by an associated pump. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, a rod electrode 13 may have an addition heating element 14 and a solenoid 16 and an auxiliary cathode 17, e.g., a cold MgO cathode, may be provided. The baffle plates may be the same or of opposite polarity and may be designed as magnetic pole shoes of ferromagnetic material.
