Abstract

903,899. Freezing tunnels. UNILEVER Ltd. April 1, 1960 [April 6, 1959], No. 11635/59. Class 29. In a freezing tunnel for ice-cream briquettes, the cold air is fed into the tunnel adjacent the conveyer entrance and exit and is withdrawn intermediate the ends of the tunnel, the air withdrawn from one-half of the tunnel being supplied to the inlet of the other half. As shown, an endless belt has its upper and lower runs 3, 4 passing through upper and lower tunnels 1, 2, the briquettes passing first through tunnel 1 and then through tunnel 2 in which they are suspended from the run 4, by being frozen thereto. Mid-way along tunnel 1 an oblique partition 14 diverts the air flow from tunnel sections 1a, 1b to outlet pipes 19, 23, respectively, and fans 22, 26 draw these streams through coolers 20, 24 and force them into the inlet 17 and outlet 18 of tunnel 1. Thus spent air from section la or 1b is cooled and supplied to section 1b or la. The air inlets are directed along the length of the tunnel so that they exert a Venturi action to maintain atmospheric pressure at conveyer entrance 7 and exit 9, this pressure being regulated by flap valves 37 in the inlets. This prevents loss of cold air from the tunnel. Identical air supply arrangements are provided for tunnel 2.
