Abstract

<PICT:1090063/C6-C7/1> Moist sugar cubes carried from moulding station (not shown) via housing 11 to packing station (not shown) by endless conveyer belt 3, are dried in housing 11 by gas jets emanating from nozzles in plate 12, the gas jets having a temperature of 110-220 DEG C. and a velocity of 15 to 50 metres/sec. The plate 12 separates pressure chamber 14 from chamber 15 through which the cubes are conveyed. The housing may comprise various zones and in one of these zones the cubes may be subjected to cold gas jets to cool the cubes. In one embodiment (as shown) the housing comprises zones 27, 28, 29 each of which is provided with its own system for recirculating used gas. In zone 27 used gas is withdrawn from chamber 15 through conduit 50 by fan 32, supplied with fresh gas from port 47, heated by heater 35 and passed to nozzles in plate 12 via conduit 41 and pressure chamber 14. Some of the gas is exhausted at outlet 53. In another embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown) the used gas in each zone is passed to the succeeding zone and the gas from the last zone is recirculated to the first zone, each zone being provided with its own fan and heater.
