902,889. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 12, 1961 [Jan. 21, 1960], No. 2317/60. Class 39 (4). In a nuclear fuel element comprising fissile material 2 contained in a tubular sheath 3, and heat-insulating members 8, 9 spacing the fissile material from end caps 4, 5, the heatinsulating members are restrained against lateral movement against the sheath. As shown, alumina discs 8, 9 are confined in cylindrical recesses 10, 11 in the inner faces of the end caps. The fuel rod has circumferential grooves 12 into which the sheath is forced. Grooves 28, 29 contain thin rings of uranium to provide a check on edge welds 6, 7. In modifications, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), (a) each disc 8, 9 is replaced by a plurality of thin heat-insulating discs or (b) the discs are of stepped form so that the whole of the end cap is protected from contact with the fuel.
