Abstract

Ceramic fissile material element for nuclear reactors. The element has a sheath which contains fissile material and whose volume is divided into at least two cylindrical zones with a different fuel composition. Specifically the fissile material zones are coaxial, with the outer zone containing more fissile material than the inner one. The fissile material element consists of tablets lying on top of each other. Alternatively the element can consist of particles formed into a compact unit. Materials particularly concerned are transuranium elements, e.g. thorium, uranium or plutonium in the form of a suitable compound such as oxide, carbide nitride.
