Abstract
902,485. Electrolytic production of aluminium. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. March 11, 1959 [March 28, 1958], No. 8432/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. Aluminium is obtained by electrolysis of an electrolyte containing aluminium fluoride and sodium fluoride and having a lithium content equal to that resulting from the addition of lithium fluoride in an amount of from 2 to 20% by weight of the electrolyte, the cell being operated with a voltage drop across it at least substantially equal to that employed with no lithium-containing compound in the electrolyte. The lithium may actually be provided as lithium fluoride, lithium cryolite, lithium aluminate, lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide. The cathode may be surfaced with the boride or nitride of titanium, zirconium, tantalum or niobium. Specifications 800,092 and 802,905 are referred to.
