Abstract
a - Chloro - or a - bromo - d - valerolactam, -e -caprolactam or -#z-oenantholactam is prepared by reacting 2-chloro-azacyclo-2,3-hexene-N-carbochloride, 2-chloro-azacyclo-2,3-heptene-N-carbochloride or 2 - chloro - azacyclo - 2,3-octene-N-carbochloride with hypochlorous or hypobromous acid or a salt thereof in the presence of water.
