Abstract
901,777. Direct connections between conductors. SYMONS, N. S. Aug. 30, 1960 [Sept. 11, 1959; March 3, 1960], No. 29896/60. Class 38(1). A joint for thermoplastic coated wires is formed by bringing the coated wires into preliminary contact, applying heat to the parts in contact to soften the thermoplastic insulation, applying pressure to the joint while the plastic is soft, to cause the insulation to be forced out from between the wires and the wires to be brought into good electrical contact, and finally heating and moulding the insulation at the joint, if necessary, to make a seal against water. In the joint shown in Figs 1 to 4, the two loosely entwined insulated wires 1, 2, e.g. the two conductors of two telephone cables, are heated until the insulation (e.g. polyethylene) is soft, whence the two wires are further twisted together, forcing the two conductors together through the insulation. The coalesced thermoplastic is cut at point 6, forced back to point 9, where the entwined conductors are cut and then pushed back over the severed conductor ends and is finally heated to coalesce and form a water-tight seal 11. Alternatively the two wires may be twisted together with their ends in opposite directions (Figs. 8, 9, not shown), or (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown), the two wires may be joined in a reef-knot and the conductors brought into contact by tightening the knot. The conductors may be coated with a low temperature melting solder during manufacture, the polyethylene (if used) forming a flux for the solder or, the conductors may be soldered when the insulation is pulled back.
